List: 10 of the Best Vegetarian Sandwiches in OKC

November 3 is National Sandwich Day and it is definitely a day with celebrating. It’s just so hard to beat a nice sandwich, don’t you think? I’m so glad that Oklahoma City has tons of creative vegetarian options from which to choose. Below, 10 of my favorites! Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions in the comments.

SATURN GRILL

Falafel Sandwich. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again—Saturn Grill without a doubt has the best falafel in OKC. It’s loaded with spices, and when you bite into it you can still see some of the solid chickpeas. I much prefer this to the overly processed falafel patties at a lot of places. The sandwich comes with homemade yogurt-tahini and spicy red pepper sauces, which are both excellent. I also like to add goat cheese to my falafel sandwich for extra creaminess. They do a falafel salad too if you’re in the mood for that!

Roasted Veggie Sandwich. Vegetarians can’t go wrong with this one! The Roasted Veggie Sandwich comes loaded with oven roasted zucchini, red bell peppers, red onion and portobello mushrooms with tomato, spinach, pesto and mayo on flatbread. I'm not a fan of tomato or zucchini, so I usually ask to leave those off and add avocado and goat cheese instead. This is great paired with their Tomato Basil Soup when available!

THE MULE

The Herbivore. I've never in my life encountered a vegetarian grilled cheese quite like the Herbivore from The Mule. The toppings on this thing are absolutely insane; we're talking cashew cheese, roasted beets, mushrooms, sundried tomato pesto, avocado, grilled jalapeños, grilled onions and chipotle aioli, all between two slices of Vienna wheat bread. I'll sometimes add gruyere cheese as well if I'm in the mood for gooey, melty goodness, but it's honestly totally fine as is.

KITCHEN NO. 324

Really Fancy Grilled Cheese. My OG favorite sandwich at at Kitchen is their grilled cheese. Served on pressed sourdough bread, this grown-up grilled cheese features smoked cheddar, jack cheese, poblano-peach preserves and fresh thyme. The jam adds a touch of sweetness and heat that goes super well with the smokey cheese; ask to add grilled onions to it, and you'll be all set.

Broccolini Melt. I love broccolini, I love cheesy, melty sandwiches, and I think it is a genius idea to combine the two. This sandwich is honestly impeccable, super simple, but absolutely packed with flavor. Kitchen makes it with fire-roasted broccolini, gruyere and romesco mayo on a toasted French roll. It tasted like broccoli cheese soup in sandwich form, and I always devour every bite.

WEST ON WESTERN

Grilled Cheese. This is a grown-up grilled cheese if I've ever seen one. Let's break it down, folks: Tuscan bread (everything from Tuscany is fancy, of course), herbed ricotta (perhaps one of the best cheeses), goat cheese, mozzarella and basil pesto. The bread is super thick, incredibly buttery and acts as a perfect, crispy anchor for the insanely gooey cheese. And combine all this with basil pesto? Get outta here. I've heard several people say they've had bad experiences at West (I personally never have), but I have one word for those people: Postmates.

ELEMENTAL COFFEE

P.C.P. This is seriously, seriously, one of the best dishes in all of OKC. I’ve honestly never had anything like it anywhere else. In its original form, the PCP comes with roasted chicken, spinach, peanut cilantro pesto, hot pepper cheddar and jalapeños on a grilled wheat tortilla. To make this baby vegetarian, just sub the chicken for avocado and you’re good to go.

Now, from the description, you might be expecting a simple twist on an everyday quesadilla—but not so. The hot pepper cheddar is actually added to the outside of the tortilla, which results in a super crispy creation. Plus, it’s only $10, really filling and you get a a choice of side, too (I recommend the macaroni salad).

Sweet Jesus. This sandwich is aptly named, as it will 100% leave you saying, “Sweet Jesus that was tasty!” I just love all the great flavor combos here — thyme roasted cauliflower, sweet potato mash, tomato (I leave this off), gruyere and a fried runny egg on rye bread. It’s creamy and rich, loaded with herbs and just all around killer. Goes great with their roasted carrots as a side!

SCOTTIE’S DELI

Hummus Delight. I’m obsessed with the garlicky goodness that is the Hummus Delight Sandwich at Scottie’s Deli (I mean seriously, guys, must love garlic). Scottie’s makes everything in-house, from the hummus to the bread to every single dressing and sauce on the menu, which I appreciate. This badass sandwich comes on vegan-friendly wheat bread and is loaded with the aforementioned garlic hummus plys carrots, olive salad, red onions, lettuce and havarti cheese (I ordered mine without cucumbers or tomatoes). This is truly and honestly one of the best hummus sandwiches I’ve ever had. Pictured above is the sandwich with their homemade potato salad, Basque Garlic Tomato Soup and macaroni salad—yummo all around.

CAFE 501

Grilled Portobello Mushroom Sandwich. Despite its name, this sandwich actually features button mushrooms and not portobellos; I prefer button mushrooms, actually, so whatever. These marinated little beauties are blanketed with spinach, grilled onions, avocado, alfalfa sprouts and a layer of basil mayo on focaccia bread. This is a juicy, glorious sandwich, folks…one that’s making my mouth water right now. It comes with pasta salad as the side, but for an up-charge you can get a bowl of black bean chili (do it).
